The Scientific and Technical Awards are not competitive — there are no nominees. The Academy selects honourees in three classes: the Academy Award of Merit (Oscar statuette), the Scientific and Engineering Award (Academy plaque), and the Technical Achievement Award (Academy certificate). These recognise innovations that have made a significant impact on the way films are made.
