Before the series, there was the film: Friday Night Lights (2004), directed by Peter Berg, starring Billy Bob Thornton as Coach Gary Gaines — adapted from Bissinger's 1990 book about Odessa Permian football. Connie Britton appeared in the film before becoming Tami Taylor on the show.
