The Role — Jess Merriweather

Jess Merriweather arrives with the show’s East Dillon reinvention, and she is one of the cleverest ideas the writers ever had. The daughter of a former coach, Jess knows the game better than most of the boys on the roster — she keeps stats in her head, reads defenses on instinct, and quietly wants the one job a Texas high-school program would never think to offer a teenage girl: a place on the sideline calling plays.

Credited during this era as Jurnee Smollett-Bell, she grounds a character who could have been a sketch into someone fully felt. Jess is romantic interest, equipment manager, surrogate parent to her younger brothers, and a stubborn football mind all at once, and Smollett refuses to let any single thread flatten the others. Her arc — pushing to be taken seriously as a coach rather than a manager — is the series at its most forward-looking.

Before Dillon

Born October 1, 1986, in New York City, Jurnee Smollett was a working actress before she was ten. She appeared on the sitcoms Full House (1992–1994) and On Our Own (1994–1995), then earned wide critical notice for her performance as young Eve in Kasi Lemmons’s acclaimed independent film Eve’s Bayou (1997). By the time she joined Friday Night Lights she had already built more than a decade of on-camera experience.

After Friday Night Lights

The years after Dillon mark a remarkable ascent into leading roles. She joined HBO’s True Blood (2013–2014), then carried WGN America’s Underground as Rosalee, an enslaved woman fleeing north on the Underground Railroad. In 2020 she had a banner year: starring as Letitia “Leti” Lewis in HBO’s Lovecraft Country — a performance that earned a Primetime Emmy nomination — and playing Black Canary in Warner Bros.’ Birds of Prey. She went on to feature in the Netflix thriller Spiderhead (2022), now working simply as Jurnee Smollett.
