The Role — Matt Saracen
Matt Saracen begins Friday Night Lights as an afterthought — the shy, stammering backup quarterback who never expected to play. When star QB Jason Street is paralyzed in the pilot, Saracen is thrust into the starting job for the Dillon Panthers, and the series turns his terrified first snaps into one of television’s most beloved underdog arcs. Gilford plays him with a halting, watchful vulnerability that made the character feel less like a teen-drama lead and more like an actual nervous seventeen-year-old.
Off the field, Saracen carries a weight few of his teammates do: he is the primary caregiver for his grandmother as her memory fails, with his father deployed overseas. His tender, slow-burning romance with Julie Taylor — the coach’s daughter — anchors much of the show’s early run. The acclaimed Season 3 episode “The Son,” in which Saracen confronts the death of his estranged father, is frequently named among the finest hours the series ever produced and a showcase for Gilford’s quiet range.
Before Dillon
Born January 14, 1982, in Evanston, Illinois, Zach Gilford studied at Northwestern University before moving into acting. Friday Night Lights was his breakout role, arriving early in a career that had begun only a few years earlier; the part of Matt Saracen established him as one of the show’s most-praised young performers and launched everything that followed.
After Friday Night Lights
Gilford moved fluidly between television and film after Dillon. He led the ABC medical drama Off the Map as Dr. Tommy Fuller, played Shane in the horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy, and recurred as Gregg on the NBC crime comedy Good Girls. His collaboration with director Mike Flanagan produced two of his most celebrated performances — the haunted, recovering Riley Flynn in the Netflix limited series Midnight Mass and a role in The Midnight Club — alongside an appearance in Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher. More recently he has played serial-killer-turned-informant Elias Voit in Criminal Minds: Evolution.
