His Role on Friday Night Lights

Brian Grazer is one of the executive producers who carried Friday Night Lights from the page to the screen and kept it there. Through Imagine Entertainment — the company he co-founded with Ron Howard — Grazer was a producing force behind both the 2004 feature film and the television series that followed, lending the project the institutional muscle of one of Hollywood’s most successful production houses.

That backing mattered. Friday Night Lights was never a ratings juggernaut, and a show with its modest numbers could easily have vanished after a single season. Instead it survived five, sustained in part by the kind of producing partners who valued what the show was doing on the craft level over what it was doing in the overnights. Imagine’s involvement gave the series a foundation steady enough to let Peter Berg’s loose, documentary-style approach breathe.

The Imagine Story (with Ron Howard)

Grazer and director Ron Howard founded Imagine Entertainment in the mid-1980s, and the partnership became one of the most durable in modern Hollywood. The two have produced together for decades across film and television, building a slate that spans crowd-pleasing studio hits and serious, awards-caliber drama. Their collaboration reached its peak with A Beautiful Mind, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture — an Oscar Grazer shared as a producer of the film.

Beyond the films, Grazer is also the author of A Curious Mind, a book built around the “curiosity conversations” he has pursued with people far outside the entertainment world — an approach he credits as the engine behind much of his producing instinct.

Selected Producing Credits

Grazer’s body of work as a producer ranges widely — from the comedy that launched his career to prestige biographical drama and genre-defining television. Splash, Apollo 13, 8 Mile, and American Gangster sit alongside television landmarks such as 24, Arrested Development, and Empire, a span that few producers can match in either volume or variety.
