His Role on Friday Night Lights
If Peter Berg gave Friday Night Lights its look, Jason Katims gave it its heart. As showrunner, executive producer, and lead writer across all five seasons (2006–2011), Katims was the person responsible for what the show actually felt like week to week — the marriages, the small humiliations, the quiet acts of grace that made a football drama into one of the most emotionally honest series of its era.
He embraced Berg’s loose, improvisational method rather than fighting it, building scripts that left room for actors to breathe and for a scene to find its own truth on the day. The result was a show that never felt written even though it was written with enormous care. Katims’ work on the series finale, “Always,” earned him the 2011 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series — a rare bit of awards recognition for a show that critics adored and the industry too often overlooked.
Before Dillon
Katims came up as a playwright before moving into television, and he made his name on character-first dramas long before Friday Night Lights. He was a writer and producer on the short-lived but beloved My So-Called Life in the mid-1990s, then created the alien-teen drama Roswell, which ran from 1999 to 2002. That grounding in adolescence and family feeling would become the spine of everything that followed.
Beyond Friday Night Lights
After Dillon, Katims created Parenthood (2010–2015), a sprawling, deeply felt NBC family drama that became his other signature work and carried forward the same emotional realism. He went on to develop and adapt a string of series — the network comedy About a Boy, the high-school musical drama Rise, and the Prime Video series As We See It, which centered three young adults on the autism spectrum. Across all of it, his subject has stayed remarkably constant: ordinary people trying, and often failing, and trying again to take care of one another.
