Her Role on Friday Night Lights

Kerry Ehrin was one of the writer-producers who helped give Friday Night Lights its emotional intelligence. She joined the series as a consulting producer and writer, a role she carried across the show’s run, and she wrote some of its most quietly devastating hours — the kind of episodes that lived in kitchens and hospital hallways rather than on the fifty-yard line.

The looseness Peter Berg built into the show’s shooting style needed scripts that could survive being reshaped on the fly, and Ehrin’s did. Her writing on Friday Night Lights earned recognition from the Writers Guild, whose nominations for the series’ dramatic writing in the late 2000s reflected the strength of the room she was part of.

In the Writers’ Room

Ehrin came to Dillon already steeped in character-driven television. Her credits stretched back to the 1980s, and by the time she reached Friday Night Lights she had spent years learning how to write people rather than plots — how to let a scene breathe and a relationship turn on a single look. That instinct fit the show perfectly.

It also became the foundation for everything she did next. The Friday Night Lights room was a famous incubator of talent, and Ehrin emerged from it as a writer ready to run her own shows — first as a co-creator, then as a showrunner steering some of the most-discussed television of the streaming era.

Beyond Dillon

After Friday Night Lights, Ehrin co-created Bates Motel for A&E alongside Carlton Cuse, serving as its showrunner and lead writer across all five seasons. The series reimagined the origins of Norman Bates and became a critical favorite, anchored by Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore.

She then moved to Apple TV+, where she became showrunner and an executive producer of The Morning Show, the high-profile newsroom drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Taking over the project, she shaped its voice through its early seasons and extended her relationship with Apple in the years that followed.
