Angela Norris — The Character

Angela is Tommy Norris’s ex-wife, and the show is careful not to make her a scorned woman waiting for her estranged husband to come back around. Their divorce is not clean and their relationship is not finished, but Angela has done the work of moving forward in ways Tommy has not. She understands him completely — which makes everything harder rather than easier. The show is honest about what that particular dynamic costs both of them: the difficulty of two people who know each other too well to pretend the other doesn’t matter.

Larter plays the role without sentimentality. Angela is not pining. She has made her decisions and is living inside them. The emotional intelligence of the performance is in what it withholds as much as what it expresses.

The Career

Ali Larter began as a model before transitioning to acting in the late 1990s. Varsity Blues (1999) gave her her first significant film role, and she built a solid genre career through the early 2000s with the Final Destination series (she appeared in the first two films) and House on Haunted Hill (1999). Her career pivoted substantially with Heroes (NBC, 2006–2010), the superhero drama that became a cultural phenomenon in its first season. She played Niki Sanders — and, as the show’s mythology expanded, Tracy Strauss and other connected characters — a set of roles that required her to differentiate multiple versions of the same face through entirely different physicalities and psychological registers. The technical precision of that work was more demanding than the show’s reception always acknowledged.

The Resident Evil film franchise gave her a second major action franchise: she played Claire Redfield in Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), and The Final Chapter (2016), a character who became one of the series’ most reliable anchors. Obsessed (2009), opposite Beyoncé and Idris Elba, demonstrated her ability to hold her own in a star-heavy ensemble. Landman marks her return to prestige drama — a move back toward the character-focused work she did in Heroes at her best.
